6 Beauty Splurges You Deserve for The New Year

At year’s end, and after a busy holiday season I usually like to reward myself with a small luxury; like splurging on a new beauty item for my daily routine. Here is a list of my current favorites that are totally worth it and will make you feel like a million bucks. I’m normally a major cheapskate when it comes to beauty products so these guys only make it into my makeup bag after a ridiculous amount of hemming and hawing. So at least you know, they’ve all been pre-hemmed and hawed.

beauty splurges for the new year

  1. Nars Blush in Orgasm – Universally flattering on any complexion, in any season, this blush was introduced to me by my effortlessly gorg friend who did my wedding makeup and I’ve never looked back.
  2. Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Eye De-Puffer – This little guy packs a powerful punch and you can feel it instantly working on those puffy eyes after you’ve had a few too many dirty martinis.
  3. It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Anti-Aging Concealer – Of all the under-eye concealers in the land my makeup bag (and there may be at least 10) this one is by far my favorite. The creamy formula – which you only need a tiny dot of – smooths, stays, moisturizes and covers. In the winter when my skin is more pale and a bit dry I use it to cover other blemishes and dark spots too.
  4. Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment by Fresh – Best. Ever. Lip stuff. There’s enough color in this baby to skip lipstick or gloss, it moisturizes like a chapstick, it’s not goopy or sticky and the shade works well all year ’round for a fresh faced look. I’ve been using it for years and I don’t think I’ll ever stop.
  5. Butter London La Moss Nail Lacquer – A deep, wine red for fingers in the cold months and toes in the warm months. Goes on in thin coats and doesn’t chip for days – even if you use your hands like a short order cook.
  6. Oribe Supershine Light – I discovered this hair treatment at my salon and was initially hooked by the smell. You know how your stylist sneaks products into your hair while you blab on about your boyfriend? The light, fresh aroma of this one stopped me mid-blab and I walked out with a tube that day. I really love it because it’s formulated for fine hair – a leave in treatment that won’t make my hair stick to my forehead like Gollum! I use it after I wash my hair to keep things from getting too frizzy and since you only need a small amount the tube lasts me about the whole year.

The New Year is upon us, and I’m hoping most of you have some glitzy plans to ring ‘er on in. Me? I’ll be cementing my pregnant ass on the couch with some Chinese takeout and queuing up a movie marathon with my newly earned sausage fingers. I’m totally looking forward to it.

What are your favorite beauty splurges? And what about them New Year’s plans!?

In Like With: Pink Bathroom Tile

So there seems to be a bug going around the design blog world lately which doctors are calling the ‘now we like pink tile bathrooms and think they’re super cool’ virus. Vintage 50’s pink baths are having a moment again. Some blushing beauties were recently featured on Apartment Therapy here and here. Which is cute and I’m really happy for pink tile. And of course, I love our redone bathroom and have no regrets about giving up our pink tile since we traded it for extra space and a layout that made good design sense. BUT…if I were to design a pink bathroom now, I would spin the peachy desert sunset hue of the tile to make the most of the current southwestern /// geometric /// tribal trends out there. It would look something like this, which of course, I’m in like with now.

RBD in like with pink bathrooms and southwestern desert geometric

  1. Faux Bison Skull by HodiHomeDecor – $80
  2. Canyon Pendant by Avalanche Ranch Lighting – $126
  3. Campfire Special Candle by PF Candle Co. @ Campwell – $20
  4. White Aztec, Modernist, and Black Geometric prints by Melinda Wood Designs – $5 each
  5. Modern Block Planter by Iron and Dibble – $34
  6. Vintage Pink Navajo Vase from Treasure by Demand – $25
  7. Black Rubber Coated Soap Pump by CB2 – $5
  8. Kaleido Small Tray in Apricot by Fab – $26
  9. Stripe Hammam Hand Towel by West Elm – $10
  10. Griffin Console Table by Pottery Barn – $1,099
  11. White Porcelain Vessel Sink by Polaris @ Overstock ($170) and Matte Black Faucet by Brizo @ Amazon ($358)
  12. 4″x4″ Pink Wall Tile: similar to shown, Carnation Pink by Daltile – price upon request
  13. Midcentury Magazine Rack from littlecows – $72
  14. Tribal Removable Wallpaper by Chasing Paper – $30 per panel

What do you think? Could you make pink work in your home without oozing bubble gum and ruffles? Well, if I can’t convince you to change your signature color, maybe Julia Roberts can.

Happy Weekend! Loveyoubye, Maggie

Closing Time: 20% Off at The Working Proof

One of my favorite sources for affordable art, The Working Proof, is unfortunately closing their doors this week. Friends often ask me where they can find cool art at human prices and The Working Proof was always at the top of my list of recommendations. This curated online gallery has operated for the last 5 years as a laymen’s portal to distinguished artists at reasonable price points. But founders Anna Corpron and Sean Auyeung took things a step further and linked art and charity together in one purchase: 15% of your awesome art purchase goes to a charity selected by the artist. Shopping without guilt…for awesome art…that doesn’t leave you in the poor house…win-win-win…win. I’m so sad to see it go and hope that someone else will pick up where their work left off.

Now through this Thursday, July 10th, at midnight, you can take an additional 20% off with the coupon code FAREWELL20. Scoop up some art before it’s gone and help forests, puppies, kiddos and more.

In Like With: Couches for Small Spaces

large couch

Welcome to Planet Couch. Also known as our living space, which houses our humongous hand-me-down island of lounge space. This couch, a joint bromance purchase between James and his old roommate, was traded straight-up for an Xbox when they parted ways. It’s from Bob’s Discount Furniture and it’s been going strong for over 8 years now. It’s not all that sexy, I know. But it’s ridiculously comfortable, it’s big enough for someone 7′ tall to sleep on and it’s neutral, making it easy to decorate around. Aside from a few minor gripes, I actually love it, proving that places like Bob’s aren’t kryptonite to people with (reasonable) taste.

But someday, we will replace it. And here’s why: it’s really just too big for our space and the way we like to use it. We use our living space both for entertaining and winding down at the end of the day. So we need something that hits that sweet spot between cocktail and cozy. Too soft and you can’t tell a hilarious story while balancing a plate of food on your lap. Too rigid and you want to cry before the opening credits of the latest ridiculously long movie.

Our olive green guy measures in at 100″ x 40″ x 36″, which in Sofa Land is like a submarine-sized piece. It’s too huge for our 12′ x 14′ multitasking living space. If we traded it for a smaller couch (or love seat) we would be able to comfortably fit a cocktail table and two arm chairs.

Right now we can only fit one arm chair, and while our megasauraus-sofa is big enough for four butts, we rarely have three folks take a seat there. People like to sit across from one another or at an angle – not shoulder to shoulder. Breaking up the seating options around the room, even if the number of butts you can accommodate is the same, is actually a much better arrangement for entertaining.

But remember, we can’t sacrifice comfort, since husband and I get pretty lazy after 9pm. So buh-bye to settees, camelbacks, tuxedos and daybeds. It was nice knowing your beautiful scrolling arms, cocoon-like walls and cabriole legs.

Here’s my couch-crushing criteria:

  1. Medium-tone upholstery (in blues, greens or grays) that holds up to life and hides the stubborn cat hair that my vacuum sucks at sucking up.
  2. Relatively high arms so that I can curl up in the corner with my coffee and not fall on the floor.
  3. Less than 85″ inches in total length and 40″ of total depth.
  4. Nothing so low to the ground that tall folks and Baby Boomers curse as they’re standing up.
  5. Comfortable enough to accommodate hours of binge-watching Orange Is The New Black.
  6. Extra points for sofa beds or secret storage.

And here are some picks I’ve pinned for consideration:

couch sofa for small spaces

  1. This moody guy get extra points for a secret storage drawer…what would you put in there? Oxford Storage Sofa in Ink from Room & Board – $1,999.00
  2. A tribal patterned pillow would liven the joint up fast. Jacinto Rectangle Pillow from Anthropologie – $29.95
  3. A blue beauty with rich velvet upholstery and nailhead trim…think I can commit? Charlotte Sofa in Indigo from One Kings Lane – $1,999.00
  4. I like the single cushion and relaxed feel of this pick but it comes with a high price point and only one upholstery option. Graydon Sofa in Riva Dune from Jayson Home – $3,695.00
  5. This is my current favorite with a punchy upholstery option, nice lines and a pull-out! Whammy! Paidge Sleeper Sofa in Blue Lagoon from West Elm – $1,549.00
  6. I’ll take one of these cute atomic/tribal throw pillows just in case. Endless Summer Peach & Gray Tribal Pillow from Zazzle – $28.95
  7. This color is so now I can hardly look away. But I think it skews a little too feminine and I like things to be more David Bowie, less Katy Perry. Club Spray Sofa from CB2 – $1,199.00

Do you think we have a winner here?

Loveyoubye! Maggie

In Like With : Gifts for Cool Babies

2014 has been a good year for babies so far! Several close pals of mine welcomed little sweeties in the last few months and I’ve been enjoying getting to know each of them, near and far.  All these newbies means I’ve also been spending lots of time searching for the perfect gift to welcome each one home. Being that I was [gratefully] raised by design, I usually leave the nipple creams to Aunt Phyllis and try to hunt down a cool piece of original art or handmade heirloom toy on Etsy.  If you’re not using Etsy yet…get there. It’s an easy way to support the artist community AND give an awesome/original/handmade piece made by someone who gives a hoot. I like to think handmade gifts come with a little extra soul that will rub off on the little guys somewhere down the line. Here are just a few picks that I’m in like with:

in-like-with---baby-gifts

  1. It’s never too early to introduce Baby to one of the greatest American illustrators of our time. Becky and Lisa of Organic Quilt Company totally get that and they use high quality organic cotton for all of their receiving blankets, burpers, bibs and hats. Plus, the cheeky label on their burping cloths reads, “Spit Happens”, so I automatically love them. Organic Quilt Company’s CHARLEY HARPER Collection Organic Burp Cloths, $19.50
  2. What if Baby’s Dad owns a set of turntables and his Mom is an awesome snowboarder? Well, in that case you can check out the original watercolors by Kara at GeometricInk for Baby Badass. There are so many beautiful options to choose from and each will be hand painted and signed. GeometricInk’s Geometric Bear Original Watercolor, starting at $20.00
  3. Don’t you want to be the one that gives Baby that one stuffed animal that gets dragged everywhere until it’s covered in dirt? Me too. I’m pretty sure ViolaStudio’s Animal Woolies, hand sewn from super-soft wool sweaters, would be a serious contender for the title of “1st Chair Stuffed Animal”. Viola Studio’s Handmade Hippo Woolie, $45.00
  4. My engineer husband always approves of a good set of building blocks, but you don’t have to be an engineer to fall in love with this gorgeous set. Justin and Kathleen of Smiling Tree Toys craft sustainable wooden heirloom toys in their workshop in Minnesota. They even hand press the seeds of camellia flowers grown on their family’s land to make the all-natural finish. AND if you didn’t think they could make you feel any better about yourself for buying something, they also donate a portion of all profits to The Peace Corps. Smiling Tree Toys’ 20 Piece Hardwood Building Block Set, $40.00
  5. My closest pals know I’m crazy about animals of all kinds. In the nerdy, wildlife biologist way. Not just puppies and kittens, but sea creaturesbackyard friends and especially birds! Italian watercolorist Irene paints the sweetest mini renditions of animals in her shop DIMDImini. It’s so fun to put together a group of Mini’s (3.5″ x 2.5″) as a set for Baby – and you can shop by horizontal and vertical orientation to make framing your group easy as pie. DIMDImini’s Puffin ACEO print, $5.00
  6. There’s no shortage of great artwork options out there for Baby’s new digs. I love the work of sketch artist Tommy Kane, one of the founding members of Urban Sketchers. His prints are full of [real] life and vibrant color – grit and fribble. So many of our friends are bringing Baby home to a 4th floor walkup and I like the idea of celebrating the urban nursery with one of these awesome pride of place prints. Tommy Kane’s Williamsburg Bodega, $35.00

Happy Shopping! Loveyoubye, Maggie

PS – Nobody paid me to say any of this stuff. I’m just sharing the love!

In Like With: Home Fragrance

You guys. Did you know that this Friday is National Fragrance Day?! Welp, it is. And I know I was hating on March earlier, but it turns out this week has been pretty sweet. First St. Paddy’s, then the first day of Spring (tomorrow!), and then this fragrance biz! Yippee skippy!

in-like-with---home-fragrance

In all design blogging seriousness though, there best be a National Fragrance Day. Fragrance is a major part of living, in all aspects. Can you imagine if you couldn’t breath in the scent of freshly cut grass in  summer, or bacon sizzling on the stovetop on a Sunday morning? What about never catching a whiff of a campfire at dusk or a squeeze of fresh lemon in your drink? No thank you to that life! (I know, #snobproblems)

I happen to have a very sensitive sense of smell (AKA a big nose) and include choosing scents for your space as one of the most important elements of styling. Every beautiful space should smell as distinguished and handsome as it looks. Don’t you agree? The key is to be subtle about it (no gagging on ‘fresh’ pine spray from the cleaning products aisle) and to stick to one fragrance per space (too many pretty smells at a time = same as a giant barf bag). You want to be like a wild fig and patchouli ninja. I recommend sneaking a scented candle in near the front door, putting out bar soap in the bathroom or tucking a reed diffuser behind a stack of books on your shelf. And for those that are styling au natural, opening the windows for a few hours, simmering a pot of water with some kitchen aromatics (I like lemon peel and bay leaves) or baking a little something (for guests, or not) will do the trick.

Pictured above and listed below are eight home fragrances that I’m in like with:

  1. Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Shea Butter Soap – $4.99
  2. Antica Farmacista Lemon, Verbena & Cedar Reed Diffuser – $26
  3. Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Bar Soap in Basil – $3.99
  4. Archipelago Bergamot Tobacco Soy Candle – $24.50
  5. Sabon Liquid Hand Soap in Lavender Apple – $14
  6. Astier de Villatte Aoyama Incense Box – $50
  7. Buckler’s Camp Blend Soy Candle – $38
  8. Seda France Japanese Quince Travel Tin Candle – $9.95

How will you celebrate National Fragrance Day this Friday?

Loveyoubye, Maggie
